| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Review Armstrong, a British journalist and former nun, guides us along one of the most elusive and fascinating quests of all time--the search for God. Like all beloved historians, Armstrong entertains us with deft storytelling, astounding research, and makes us feel a greater appreciation for the present because we better understand our past. Be warned: A History of God is not a tidy linear history. Rather, we learn that the definition of God is constantly being repeated, altered, discarded, and resurrected through the ages, responding to its followers' practical concerns rather than to mystical mandates. Armstrong also shows us how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have overlapped and influenced one another, gently challenging the secularist history of each of these religions. --Gail Hudson
Product Description "An admirable and impressive work of synthesis that will give insight and satisfaction to thousands of lay readers." THE WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD In this stunningly intelligent book, Karen Armstrong, one of Britain's foremost commentators on religious affairs, traces the history of how men and women have perceived and experienced God, from the time of Abraham to the present. From classical philsophy and medieval mysticism to the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the modern age of skepticism, Karen Armstrong performs the near miracle of distilling the intellectual history of monotheism into one superbly readable volume, destined to take its place as a classic.

HISTORY OF GOD July 11, 2010 The Reader 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
I received a book that was underlined in pencil and ink and highlighted in pink. The book was advertised as new. I am very disappointed in the merchant,The Green Earth, and will not order from them again. The other four books ordered from different merchants arrived as expected.
Ambitious May 16, 2010 Nick Rath (Malibu, CA) MS Armstrong does a very credible job of exploring the topic, in detail and specifics that make the study compelling. I ejoyed the read.
Amazon delivered on time and in great condition.
Inside look at Christianity, Jewish and Islamic religions March 15, 2010 Dale Lash (Mauston, WI USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was a required textbook for my degree program. Karen Armstrong was a Catholic Nun, you would not know it by reading this book. I say this because she shows both the positive and negative of all 3 of these religions without prejudice, based off from historical fact and timelines. Some that read this book may take offense to your beliefs not matching up with actual history. It took me so long to get through this book because after every chapter I had to stop and think about and process what I just read against what I had been taught, what I believe, and what is actually real true facts. It's definately well worth reading if you are interested in how Christian based religions started. Great job Karen!
By far the best information about Judaism, Christianity and Islam March 10, 2010 bookworm Egypt 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is one of my favorite books which i have given to many people. It clarifies many things. What I find most striking is to understand that all religions are not static but change with time. Christianity is now so different from the religion in the first century and so are all religions changing continually.
Who knows, maybe in 100 years we will have a religion which embraces all mankind, not only the ones born in a certain place and culture!
My belief is similar to the one of the Dalai Lama: Do what is right for you and the other people.
Piece of trash February 3, 2010 Max L. Day 2 out of 40 found this review helpful
Karen Armstrong has incorporated the ideas of probably every blasphemous heretic that has ever lived in an epic, but futile attempt to discredit the Holy Bible and the God and Savior of the Bible, Jesus Christ.
And of course, it is praised by the enemies of God (e.g. the New York Times, the Washington Post, Liberals of every religious stripe, [even some Jews!]) as the greatest thing since sliced bread. But what else could we expect from those who hate the Savior?
"Likewise, truly these apostate dreamers also defile the flesh, despise authority, and speak evil of dignitaries. Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring against him a railing accusation, but said, "The Lord rebuke you." But these speak evil of those things which they have never known; but what they know naturally, as stupid beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. Woe unto them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah." (Jude 3-11)
This book was the textbook for a class on Western religions in college. After I discovered that the class was nothing less than a Liberal brainwashing session to indoctrinate young people against the Bible, I quickly withdrew from the class, and gladly. Karen Armstrong and those who follow her ideas have only one destination, and that is the Lake of Fire. She will give an dreadful account to God for helping Satan turn innocent young minds away from the Way, the Truth, and the Life, which is Jesus Christ.
I wouldn't touch this book or any class that uses it with a ten-foot pole. It is totally Satanic.
