one of two essential guides August 21, 2010 mzholden I use this and the Peterson Field guide - between the two we can identify/distinguish even very similar birds.
Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Eastern and Central North America, Sixth Edition
Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America August 10, 2010 Donald A. Click (Durham, NC) I use this guide to replace my 40 year old Peterson's Guide. It's color, descriptions, and groupings are an improvement of what I've used for years. I'm only a backyard observer with an occasional sighting elsewhere while traveling. Sibley's is the choice of my brothers who are expert birders. So, I've stepped up to the manual of experts. It's a good buy.
Professor Required May 8, 2010 Spud (USA) I needed this for ornithology and I will be keeping it after the course is over. Good product :)
It's for the birds, and that's a good thing. April 26, 2010 B. Godwin (New River Valley, Virginia) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm just a regular guy and I don't make special trips just to watch birds. However, I am the curious type and I'd like to know, "what th' hell kinda bird keeps running up and down the trees in my back yard"?? So...I ordered this book after reading many good reviews and have been pleased to learn that it was a White-Breasted Nut Hatch.
Since receiving this book, I have found it to be invaluable in helping to identify the different types of birds that visit my back yard. The pictures are nice and detailed and will offer several drawings for each bird to include juveniles and in-flight views. It also provides some basic information like length, width, habitat and, if you speak bird, it describes its voice as well; (Yidi-yidi-yidi, Whi-whi-whi-whi). The book is medium sized and could fit in a large cargo pocket and is a softcover book so take it to the mountains or the beach and you will find it fun and informative.
Since getting this book, I've added a feeder, a blue-bird house and I keep water available. I have found them enjoyable to watch and am amazed at the different varieties that come here compared to where I used to live. I still don't go birding but when I am out, I'm more aware of the birds that are around me and find it fun and challenging to try and guess the bird and then turn to this book for the answer.
Personally, I can think of no better house warming gift than a bird book and this one would do quite nicely.
Birds April 7, 2010 Dirk Diggler (Massachusetts USA) I like to know what birds are coming to the feeder and I think I have them all indentified. It's easy with the field guide, great descriptions and pictures.
