Great supplement to agility class. July 7, 2010 CasXan This little book is packed with good information. I'm fairly new to the agility sport (7 months with 1 dog, and 1 month with the other) and even though the classes I take are informative and great practice I wanted more info. I found it with this book! It tackles each piece of equipment on its own and then helps you put them all together as well as instructing you on the right body language to get the best from your dog. Towards the back, it has recommended mini practice course to try out. Love it!
Also, there are plans for making your own equipment: jumps, stay table, and contact trainer. Just this past weekend I made all three. I have to stay, I am not much of a do-it-yourself type but agility equipment is spendy. These plans were easy to follow, especially the jumps, and were very detailed. I won't lie, the table and contact trainer take some effort but it's more time consuming than hard. If anything, buy this for the plans. I know trainers say you can train "spot" for contact equipment by using a step or street curb but I wasn't having much luck. Already, the first day using the equipment, both my agility Aussies show improvement on "spot"!
Great For Beginners May 19, 2010 Kyle Ristig As a beginner to dog agility, I found the book to be well-organized and thorough without being too technical. It provides specific information for teaching jumps, tunnels, the A-frame and dogwalk, the teeter, table, and weave poles. The book also describes how to build some of your own agility equipment using readily available materials such as PVC pipe and plywood.
Great Book for Learning the Basics February 1, 2010 L. Carlson (Granger ,Indiana) Full of useful tips and information. Great for a beginner unfamiliar with the sport/game. Well-written and easy to understand. Really appreciate the variety of positive training methods presented to help you individualize your program for your dog. Also, the explanation of necessary obedience commands and how they will aid your pup in agility (and the difference between the obedience commands and the agility form) was very helpful. Lays the groundwork very well to be able to happily teach your dog the basics.
Good beginner book with a little of every thing even building equipment January 27, 2010 R. Edmondson (Portland, OR USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Beginner's Guide to Dog Agility
Easy to understand step by step guide. Directions for building your own equipment at a small cost, lets you see if your interested before investing a lot on better equipment. I like that it offers more than one way to work on the weave poles. This book is a good starting place.
Good info for beginniners! December 6, 2009 Katherine A. East (Alaska) Me and my dog are taking agility classes. This is a great book to reinforce what we are learning in class...and to help me remember what they told me in class! Very easy to read, good info, and handy as a reference book for beginners like me.
