5 out of 5 stars I love this book!   August 31, 2010

I loved the book! It's made giving my sweet girl a healthy meal soooo easy. And cheap. I learned so much about what and what not to feed my dog. I now make her food in batches with a couple of friends who also feed a balanced raw diet to their dogs. It's more social than work, we have so much fun. After a few hours of work on Saturday we each left with 70 lbs of chicken dinners. Woo hoo! And the best part is we made the food for about $.85 a pound. Cheaper than I could buy a good kibble. We make the food whenever we find chicken, beef or turkey on sale. It pays to be a smart shopper! Before joining the food making group I used to make enough food for two weeks on my own. Admittedly not as much fun but, knowing the benefit for my dog made it so worth while.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an easy way to make the best possible food for their beloved dog or cat. It's cheaper than buying quality kibble and my dog is so much healthier. I know I'm being proactive for her long term health needs. The money saved on vet visits alone makes it a bargain. If you love your companion check out this book. You won't be sorry.

The book is full of good information on what and how to feed your dogs, but the expense and huge amount of work required to create the meals as suggested in here are unbelievable. I decided to just supplement the dogs' food with some better quality stuff.

I have been feeding my dog a homemade diet for about a year but wasn't sure if I was including the right ingredients. After reading this book, I realized I wasn't. The authors did lots of research into the ancestral diets of canines and other aspects of canine diets to come up with their recommendations for a homemade diet. I'm incorporating what I knew before this book and what I learned in this read to further the health of my older dog.

I have spent a lot of time researching homemade diets for dogs. Over the years I had seen far too many beautiful dogs begin their lives in seemingly in perfect health, only to descend into sub-par general health, and suffer with chronic skin issues, digestive problems, yeasty ears, etc. Not only were my friends uncomfortable and not able to live up to their potentials, I was paying for expensive veterinary care that was ineffective. Finally, I realized that these problems were caused by "ingredients" in commercial pet foods that should never be consumed by any living being. I decided to do something about it. My current best friend has been with me since he was 7 weeks old -- and he has never tasted a single bite of commercial dog food. At age 7-1/2 years, my yellow Lab is thriving in every way -- physically, mentally and emotionally. Important to note that his chances of living a life of perfect health were somewhere between slim and none -- he was born with only one functioning kidney; the second was deformed and useless; and he has extremely sensitive skin.

Homemade food, cooked fresh and made of quality ingredients, is the answer to many of the problems your friend may have. As well, many of the typical issues for which you have been running to the vet -- yeasty ears, itchy, flaky skin, hot spots -- are effectively dealt with using simple home remedies that are extremely cost-effective. For instance, a gentle wipe inside the ears with 1 part White Vinegar + 1 part Purified Water will painlessly kill yeast. Flax Seed oil capsules added to your friend's dinner will keep his skin soft, supple, and itch-free, and stops shedding. Vitamin E cream will cool hot spots. And I use a natural, non-chemical, non-toxic flea preventative -- an everyday food item that I add to my dog's dinner.

I highly recommend this book and also urge any animal lover reading this review to search for the simple, effective home remedies. Not only will you make your best friend very happy, you will enrich and simplify your life ... and $ave money!
