Amazon.com Review This immensely popular children's story is told from the point of view of a dog named Harold. It all starts when Harold's human family, the Monroes, goes to see the movie Dracula, and young Toby accidentally sits on a baby rabbit wrapped in a bundle on his seat. How could the family help but take the rabbit home and name it Bunnicula? Chester, the literate, sensitive, and keenly observant family cat, soon decides there is something weird about this rabbit. Pointy fangs, the appearance of a cape, black-and-white coloring, nocturnal habits
it sure seemed like he was a vampire bunny. When the family finds a white tomato in the kitchen, sucked dry and colorless, well
Chester becomes distraught and fears for the safety of the family. "Today, vegetables. Tomorrow
the world!" he warns Harold. But when Chester tries to make his fears known to the Monroes, he is completely misunderstood, and the results are truly hilarious. Is Bunnicula really a vampire bunny? We can't say. But any child who has ever let his or her imagination run a little wild will love Deborah and James Howe's funny, fast-paced "rabbit-tale of mystery." (Ages 9 to 12)
Product Description BEWARE THE HARE!Is he or isn't he a vampire? Before it's too late, Harold the dog and Chester the cat must find out the truth about the newest pet in the Monroe household -- a suspicious-looking bunny with unusual habits...and fangs!

Review From Books & Wine July 10, 2010 Books & Wine (New York United States) Seriously, why would you want to read about a vampire stalker when you can read about a vampire bunny? Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe is a fantastic children's book which would be a perfect read for today, Halloween, especially if you have children who frighten easily (there are no real scary moments). The book begins with an authors note, about recieving a manuscript from a dog, from then on it is told in first person from Harold's point of view. Harold being the dog, of course. Harold's narration reminded me a bit of Sherlock Holmes, but for children of course.
Aside from Harold, I felt the secondary character of Chester the cat to be the type of cat I would someday want. Maybe this is because Chester can read and has excellent taste in books. Chester, however, does not warm up very quickly to vampires. Yet, Chester's the most perceptive of all of the characters, and perhaps this is why I love Chester. I like that he isn't oblivious, if it was a horror movie, I wouldn't be yelling at him.
Actually, the majority of characters in this book were likable, however the family was a bit flat. Then again, this is a short book, my portion was 98 pages long, so how much can you really develop characterization. Also it is a book for children, and a super-quick read!
Bunnicula: A Rabbit- Tale of Mystery May 12, 2010 Nina Shaw I LOVE Bunnicula! I first read it in the fourth grade as a suggesstion from the school librarian. Thank you, Ms. Spurney! I am now 38 with 2 teenage daughters, and have re-read it and it's companions so many times I've lost track. I have the whole series. I made both of my daughters read the series, and even my husband has read it. If someone asks what my favorite book is I always say without hesitation or embarassment Bunnicula! I have reccommended it to so many I can't count, and any who have read it fall in love with it too! I even named my childhood cat who looked like Chester, Chester. I can't thank The Howes enough for writing this wonderfully silly story, and Mr. Howe for continuing to add to the legacy. Truly Bunnicula is a must read for anyone with a sense of humor and a love of animals. These books will not change the world, and they probably won't win Mr. Howe a Pulitzer, but they definitely do have some meaning, and will teach children a lesson whether they realize it or not. They are a great read because they're humorous, but also touching. You find out that Harold and all the others seem like they really could talk, and it makes you wonder about your own pets. If I'm having a bad day I just pick up one of the books and in no time my mood is better! If I had to use just one word to describe the book it would be memorable because once you meet this cast of characters(and charaters they are) you'll never forget them!
Today vegetables, tomorrow the world! January 29, 2010 drebbles (Arlington, MA USA) Howard the Dog and Chester the Cat enjoy living with their humans - Harold especially likes Toby who enjoys feasts that he shares with Harold. So when the family brings home a bunny they name Bunnicula, it isn't surprising that Harold and Chester are a bit jealous of the attention the family focuses on Bunnicula. But Chester's jealousy soon turns into the suspicion that Bunnicula is a vampire. He sets out to prove it - no matter what the cost.
Although "Bunnicula" is aimed at readers ages 8 - 12, it is a delightful book for readers of all ages. It is written in the first person from Harold's point of view and it is a lot of fun reading what Harold thinks about the goings on as well as his constant focus on food. Also fun to read is Chester's ongoing battle to prove Bunnicula is a vampire and how his efforts baffle the family who think Chester is just being a cat. Harold and Chester remind me a lot of the Satchel and Bucky characters in the Get Fuzzy comic strip although Chester is not nearly as mean as Bucky. There is a wonderful sense of humor throughout the book and the vampire elements are never scary and played for fun. In fact, I laughed out loud at times especially when Chester tries to steak..er stake Bunnicula.
"Bunnicula" (the first of many books in the Bunnicula series) is a delightfully funny book for readers young and old.
Vampire Rabbits October 31, 2009 Whatcha Reading Now? (Florida, USA) When the Monroe's bring home a new, furry bunny rabbit, Harold the dog and Chester the cat suspect he's not as cute, cuddly and harmless as he appears. Young readers will be entertained by this silly tale, which is made even more fun as it is told from Harold the dog's point of view.
