Marcykelly July 1, 2010 Marcykelly As a first time puppy owner, I picked this book to help me figure out how to start on the correct foot from the beginning. I've found the information very helpful as it describes in detail the stages of a dogs development and ways to enhance their early learning experiences to broaden their horizons and essentially help them be a better dog because of exposure to those experiences. I have also found it a little frightening because a lot of what is suggested is for the period during which the breeder has the puppy and I don't have any control over what happens while he is there, so I have to just hope that the breeder is doing all the "things" that the pup needs to be a well balanced dog. I guess it is good if you are a breeder and want to know what to do with a 3 week old pup. Overall, a good read. Helpful suggestions for socializing the young pup.
Good book when used with other resources June 23, 2010 Stephen Lerch (Elkton, MD United States) This book does a good job giving you a generic 10,000 foot view of puppy rearing. It is well written and nicely illustrated.
It does rely on providing treats for most things, but the thing to remember with treats is that they add calories to a dog's diet, just like eating an Oreo for a person. If you decide to go the route of giving treats for everything, adjust your pup's serving sizes at breakfast/dinner to allow for the calories from the treats. Even better than using treats all the time, use them all the time... at first. Once your pup seems to "get" whatever you're trying to teach him, start to mix it up; only give a treat every other success or every third success and so on.
I do personally prefer The Art of Raising a Puppy from the Monk's of New Skete, and while the top reviewer says the Monk's methods aren't practical, I'm not sure why not. If you mix leash training and treat training, you should be able to get a pup to do just about anything you want when it comes to obedience, which is the cornerstone for every other trick they will learn.
As with any training method, pick up a couple different books with different methods and pick the one that's right for you, or mix and match until you find what works for you and your dog/pup.
How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With June 22, 2010 Jo Jane Binsfeld (Bloomington, MN, US) This is an excellent book ,especially for first-time dog owners, but also for people who haven't owned a dog for a while. As I help to place rescued Golden Retrievers with new homes, I try to always include a copy of this book in the package; at least, I always recommend it highly and let people know where to get it!
GREAT for new puppy owners! February 12, 2010 MLC (Patriot, Oh United States) I am a breeder & I give this book out with all my puppies! I did MUCH research on MANY books to find this one. It is the best out there to give to all my puppy buyers whether they are first-time puppy owners or have had dogs all their lives. After I picked this book, I found Dr. Threlfall DVM of OSU (world re-known for his work with dogs) also recommends this one! It is very thorough, leaving out nothing, from choosing a puppy/breeder to care & training, to adulthood. LOTS of pics!
GREAT FOR NEW PUPPY PARENTS November 3, 2009 Denise Arzoian There's a volume of good information here. Read the book before
you buy the dog. It will guide you from deciding which breed is right for your family to how to potty train.
