| Customer Reviews: Made my life so much easier! July 9, 2010 C. G. King (Horse Country, VA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have a Jack Russell puppy who was staying pretty close by when I took him out with no leash. He has plenty of space to safely run and play here on the farm and I planned to get him trained to the Invisible Fence when he was a bit older. Early on he was doing great but then neighbors couldn't resist coming to play with him and he became bolder about following them. Since he could get lost or have an accident with other nearby dogs or cars, I had to limit his freedom. I'm training him to the fence now, but it was hard to have him confined to a regular leash and all the tangling was driving me crazy. I don't move very fast when my arthritis is bothering me and we were both getting frustrated until I got this leash.
He became used to it almost immediately. Even as small as he is it moves with him well as he explores without pulling on him too much and then retracts smoothly as he returns which eliminates tangling. He is much happier about being able to investigate a bit and search for the perfect spot to go and is performing much better in that respect than he was on a standard leash. His change in demeanor tells me he likes this leash as much as I do. When I'm training him on the fence border, I just squeeze the trigger to stop the leash from getting longer so I can easily pull him back from the line to be praised. I rarely have had to use the lock button on our walks, but have locked the line out while I'm seated and he's gnawing on a bone. It releases easily. The instant retraction can be a little noisy and has startled both of us.
It's been so hot and humid here lately, I don't much want to be outside at all, especially not walking a puppy a hundred times a day, but this leash has made an enormous difference. That activity is now more pleasant for both the puppy and me. This leash is worth its weight in gold.
Pushing the main brake trigger engages the lock switch April 28, 2010 K. Jaillet I got frustrated with this retractable leash right away. Maybe 3/4 of the times I pushed the main trigger button to apply the brake, it would also engage the lock switch. The only way to avoid this is to push the trigger brake very lightly, so you have to be conscious of the trigger every time you use it so as not to push too firmly and have it switch the leash into lock-mode, which just isn't practical. I ended up tripping over the slack in the leash every time my dog slowed down a bit after the lock-switch inadvertently engaged for my entire walk. I returned the leash and won't try the brand again because this didn't seem like the type of problem that is just a rare fluke, but more like the type of problem that results from cheap/flawed design and materials.
On the plus side, the handle is large enough for me to put all 4 fingers around it (albeit snugly) on the small-dog sized model. That is something that bugs me about the Flexi brand leashes; there is no comfortable way to get your hand around them, even on the medium-dog models. But the brake mechanism on Flexi has worked smoothly for me in the past so I will buy another one of those, even if I have to carry it like a teacup.
